I applied for health insurance over 30 days ago and I just received some paperwork yesterday asking for more info. How long does this take? What are the laws regarding how insurance companies handle applications for insurance? I’m in Ohio.

I have Blue cross and blue shield. It took them like a week to approve my application. But, it took another week to two weeks for them to send me my card and plan details. I think I actually got my documents a day after my plan was suppose to start.
Call the company up, see why it is taking so long.

If there’s not a problem, it usually happens in a week to ten days. If there are pre-existing conditions, then it can take a month or two. The longer it takes, the less likely they will take you on.

I don;’t know how long it should take, but you can apply online and recieve streamlined service. My suggestion is to go to and see if the plan you want is available in Ohio. Then, I would apply again. Many of the plans here allow for immediate electronic applications. Also, this service has licensed insurance agents for Ohio that you can call. (see the phone number on the right). They can tell you how long it should take. Good luck.

30 days seems like a very long time. I got my quotes online like three hours after I submitted the form, and was insured in less than a week. Maybe you should try these guys, and see what happens. I bet you would be insured before you ever even hear from that other company.
