Liberals: Health care is a fundamental need and should be protected by government?

So since health care is necessary for an acceptable standard of living we should get involved to make sure everyone has enough?

But what about food, clothing and housing? Those are necessary, should we all have grocery insurance and a govt. clothing allowance? Where does it stop?

In order to understand the true nature of Liberalism, and to dispel the misconceptions fomented by those whose agenda is counter to our freedom, I will detail the tenets of Liberal thought and dispel the misconceptions so often put forth by Conservative rhetoric.

Liberalism is Life. It is freedom from physical dangers that can kill or disable us. The Liberal believes it is a nation’s job to protect its citizens from physical harm, whether from external sources, such as hostile nations, or internal ones, like crime, disease, or hunger. Without the solid ground of physical wellbeing, our nation and its citizens cannot enjoy the benefits of being free. Liberals believe in a strong military, well suited to defend the nation. Liberals believe in good laws, hard-working police, and a just legal system to protect its citizens from crime. Liberals believe in affordable health care for everyone, to keep our people strong. And Liberals believe in the availability of food and shelter for its needy, not as a hand out but as a reasonable step in moving all Americans toward self-reliance and the freedom that comes with it.

Liberalism is Liberty. It is the freedom to do as your conscience dictates without impeding another’s rights. Fleeing oppression in mother Europe, our founders established a nation where personal belief and self-determination are protected, not persecuted, where hard work is rewarded, not demanded, and where each person is bestowed with the ability to better his or her life because of citizenship, not class. Liberals believe in freedom of speech to protect us from political oppression. Liberals believe in sound regulations to protect us from economic oppression. Liberals believe in just laws to protect us from social oppression. And Liberals believe in quality education to protect us from the oppression of ignorance.

Liberalism is The Pursuit of Happiness. It is the freedom to create an environment where the individual can excel. What is freedom if it cannot be used to better our lives? A truly free society must be one where its members can rise above their limitations and expand their futures. We call it The American Dream, and it’s alive and well in the heart of the Liberal. Liberals believe in equal opportunities for all to rise above our means. Liberals believe in equal opportunities to rise above our education levels. Liberals believe in equal opportunities to rise above our social status. And Liberals believe each and every family should have an equal opportunity to make this world better for their children.

Health Care is a need but as you said, it is something each person should work for individually to attain for their family. Redistribution and sharing of Wealth is not the way to make a successful health care system. Individual Responsibility has to be the cornerstone.

If you saw how people without insurance are draining the system, you may be able to understand that something needs to be done. Notice your insurance premiums and co-pays going up, some of that can be credited to people without insurance.
It’s like shoplifters, when they steal, the store keeper needs to charge us more to make the money up.
When hospitals are loosing money from people not paying, they need to charge the paying people more.

Find me a grocery chain that denies food to a person who is starving to death….who bars the doors when PAYING customers who have shopped there for years suddenly NEED that food. You seem to be ignoring what HMO’s do to their own customers.

the standard is set by a general consensus amongst economically developed democracies so yes health care is a fundamental need and should be ensured by the government

when the usa can only come 32nd amongst all countries for child mortality we know our current system is deeply flawed and needs to be replaced

History of man started about 4000BC, my how the bare essentials of life have changed.

The basic needs of life use to be food, water, clothing and shelter.
If you get caught in the elements without such you will soon die,

Now we have added, cable TV, internet access and cell phones to what even our poor seem entitled too,

    Health care is next,

What has happened in education, a work ethic and responsibility.

In 4000BC if you were not smart enough, and didn’t do it, your died.

Things have not changed for the better, we are weakening our own species and will be the demise of ourselves.

The government should provide me a car so I can go and get my food. But they will have to provide gas to go along with the car too. Then provide insurance for it also. Otherwise how can I possibly survive?

actually the where-does-it-stop? argument was used back in the 30’s when FDR proposed social security. It was dusted off in the 60’s when johnson proposed medicare and civil rights. Now, of course, many have revived this same argument (that would be you). Actually, government is attempting to give americans a CHOICE. Are you saying you are against this freedom of choice? I know an example will not help you understand, but there MAY be someone who will see the comparative wisdom: say there was no post office, and it cost five dollars to mail a bill payment via fed ex or ups. (i don’t know the actual cost of doing so today, but that’s not important right now). Now say the president proposed starting a postal system like we have today. What would the right claim? It’s socialism! It will destroy private business! Why is obama wanting to destroy america? But in reality, the government run postal system is simply COMPETITION that gives the bill sender a lower cost of mailing something. But the government run post office can do this because there is (relatively) little advertisement costs and no million-dollar salaries to pay it’s top executives. And guess what? fed ex and ups are doing fine, thank you. My point is, health care is being proposed along this same principle, and those against it are the same ones that would argue against a postal system. Rationally sane people can understand this; narrow minded folks cannot.

That’s the problem w/this sort of thinking -anything can be framed as a ‘need’, I guess it depends on the person you ask…’shelter’ is a very basic need, but by looking @ the rents or cost of housing in any larger city -one can truly say it’s ‘out of reach’ for many!

I agree that everyone should have health care — but it shouldn’t be free for some people, while others have to pay for it. Everyone should be required to pay their fair share. Just like car insurance — we’re all required to have it, and we all find ways to pay for it. Health insurance shouldn’t be any different. Everyone should have it and everyone should pay for it.
