ABSOLUTELY! Lots of mental illness is hereditary-like depression and bi-polar disorder. These are physical problems THAT SHOW UP AS BRAIN and mental dysfunctions
Children can release problems like anxiety, paranoia, anger and other long-buried traumas. Post-partum depression can be fatal or homicidal.
Parents who don't want or mistreat their children can contribute to severe OCD and narcissistic personality disorders. Even Post-traumatic Stress disorder from being sexually abused or beaten. Split personalities are related to having severe damage in childhood.
Phobias and lots of other weird behavior can come from being raised badly.
If you are mentally ill, you may very well pass the POSSIBILITY on to your children. It is also possible for perfectly sane people to have mentally ill children.
It is also possible for TREATED people to have normal children.
People TEACH their children what they know. If you know pain, violence and screaming-that is what your kids get. If you know calmness, kindness, gentlenss, that is what you give your children.
That is why abused people often grow up to abuse others.
Hurt people hurt people.
Lots of people get help FIRST and then have children. Or never have children, so they won't continue the legacy of pain and suffering.
Most just have kids, and THEN figure out they made a mistake, and the kids suffer.

Some mental "disorders" are genetic, which means if you have one it's likely that your child will have it too, but it's not a hard-and-fast rule. I have a friend who has been on medication since she was a teenager for bipolar disorder (manic-depressive), but her teenaged daughter has not shown a single sign of being bipolar. On the flipside, my father-in-law's mother committed ******* when she was in her late '60's, and now my father-in-law is on medication for severe depression to include thoughts of ******* (and he's in his late '60's). It's really a crap-shoot. Having a family history may increase your chances, but it certainly doesn't meen you're doomed to have whatever your parents or grandparents have/had...

Most definitely. My friend just lost his mother to ******* from schizophrenia and he always worries he's going to become sick. He told me himself its hereditary. But, perhaps it could skip a generation.

A parent with a disorder raises the risk for the child to have a disorder, but it's hard to predict. It's not like migraines (which are more likely than not to show up if one parent suffers from them). It just means that the child will have an increased risk relative to the general population.

I do agree with Rose! I am no expert but I do believe that mental health issues and problems can be genetically passed down but you also have the environment where some of the issues are from that.My Dad,my aunt (on my mother's side) and my brother all had (have mental problems) and I am dealing with some of the same issues. I am not sure but I do think my mother had some problems also.
Best of Luck.

SOME mental health problems are hereditary, meaning that if your parents, or someone else in your family has them, you are more at risk to develop them yourself. It doesn't mean you WILL have the problem, just that it's more likely you will.

My dad used to say that mental illness was 'reverse hereditary'. You get it from your kids! 8^)

I could be passed on to their child, because it's in your genes.

Basically, your children will be more susceptable to those problems, but it doesn't mean that they will or will not have them.

Yes, mental illnesses are genetic and can be passed onto your children....but not necessarily. Your child might have a much more mild version of the condition.
