Can I use Health Savings Account contributions to pay off surgery bills from a preexisting surgery?

I set up a Health Savings Account (HSA) in October 2008. I had wrist surgery in May 2008. Can I use any of those funds to pay off some bills?

    I don’t think so but check with your HR department

    No. The surgery predates the HSA.
