Today, more than ever, the benefits of vitamins are so crucial.  In the last fifty years, processed food has caused an epidemic of vitamin deficient foods.  By buying food that has been stored, dried, frozen, and processed, we are eating food that no longer contains the vitamins and nutrients that have been proven in sustaining long-term health.

In trying to follow all of the guidelines put out by doctors and researchers alike, it can become quite overwhelming to determine which vitamins your body needs, how much to take, and how often to take them.  Don’t be swayed by the television hype about mega-vitamins and cure-alls.  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  Talk to your doctor about what kind of vitamin is right for you.  If you want to save yourself a trip to the doctor’s office try

Code Nutrition, a customized vitamin that is uniquely yours based on your one-of-a-kind genetic code.

The following are a few quick tips for living a happier, healthier life…

Exercise. Building a healthy lifestyle on a base of regular exercise will help keep calories in balance and your weight in check.

Choose a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and healthy oils (olive and canola oil), and low in red meat and unhealthy fats.

Cut way back on the American staples like red meat, refined grains, potatoes, sugary drinks, and salty snacks.

Make sure you are getting the vitamins that you need.  Whether you take a multi-vitamin or purchase customized vitamins that will give you the right daily dosage, vitamins will give you the energy boost you need to stay healthy and active.

Stay Healthy Eat Healthy

Jennifer Salerno asked:

There is an increasing awareness about maintaining health and wellness, and the best way to stay healthy is to eat healthy. There are three main factors, which helps us in developing a complete healthy body: good diet, regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

Let us begin with diets and have a look on some healthy food groups, which we should consume. It is also essential to see the calorie-content of various foods as elevated calories in food results in health problems such as obesity and diabetes. Health experts believe that a healthy diet can lower the risks of number of life-threatening diseases such as diabetes, heart attack and osteoporosis. Hence, developing, managing and maintaining a good diet has become an essential part of our health routine.

And for doing this we should know the basic difference between a well-balanced diet and a nutritious diet. Although, most of us believe that a well-balanced diet and a nutritious diet are one and the same, in reality they are not!!! A nutritious diet would comprise of foods, which contain all the essential nutrients such as protein, vitamin, fats, carbohydrates and minerals. A well-balanced diet implies a diet that not only contains foods with all the essential nutrients, but also, in correct proportions and adequate amount. Even if you take all the essential nutrients through your daily foods, but if they are not in correct proportions or adequate amounts, you may still have to face the health problems. Therefore, instead of opting for just a nutritious diet, every health-conscious person should opt for a well-balanced diet.

The ingredients of a well-balanced diet differ according to the sex, age and physical fitness of an individual. An older adult may be unable to eat certain foods required to fulfill his/her nutritious requirements. However, a well-balanced diet can help an older adult to get the essential nutrients even through a sparse diet. For example, 100 grams of wheat and 100 grams of rice contain nearly 12 grams and 6.4 grams of protein, respectively. Similarly, 100 grams of ragi and 100 grams of rice contain 344 mg and 9 mg of calcium, respectively. Therefore, by planning a well-balanced diet we can give all the essentials nutrients even with the small amount of foods.

To derive all the essential nutrients from the foods, we shall always need to choose a variety of healthy foods. All the five essential nutrients can be derived, if a diet includes foods from the following groups:

· Green leafy vegetables

· Fresh or seasonal fruits

· Cereals and pulses

· Fish and meat products

· Dairy products such as curd, cheese etc.

Today, obesity and overweight are one of the major factors for life-threatening diseases such as atherosclerosis, heart attack and diabetes. Obesity and overweight problems are essentially caused due to not eating correctly and consuming lot of calories. Calories are needed everyday by our body for proper metabolic functioning. However, over-consumption of calories can lead to various health problems. Daily calorie needs of an individual depend on various factors such as age, physical fitness, height and weight and body composition. Hence, you also need to be conscious about the foods, which are calorie rich. Take a look at following figures:

· 28 grams of butter = 200 calories

· 37 grams of potato chips = 200 calories

· 75 grams of burger = 200 calories

· 66 grams of hot dogs = 200 calories

· 385 grams of apples = 200 calories

· 357 grams of green peas = 200 calories

· 588 grams of broccoli = 200 calories

· 1425 grams of celery = 200 calories

Knowing this you would surely choose to buy a few kilograms of apples that provide you other nutrients also rather than to eat burgers or hot dogs to avoid unnecessary calorie intake. Ideally, women require 1940 calories and men require 2550 calories intake in a daily basis. You may also plan a well-balanced and optimum calorie-intake diet by discussing it with your dietician.

Remember, you can avoid a lot of future treatments and medications by maintaining a well-balanced diet and optimizing your health care.

Should dry food ingredients like sugar, coffee powder, tea powder, chilly powder , nuts, flour etc be stored only in food safe plastics ? Or any plastic container is alright? I am concerned about plastic leaching into ingredients, which may cause serious health issues. I know it is not good to store cooked food in non safe plastic containers. But does it hold the same for dry food ingredients also? Clarify please.

Stay Healthy Outside and Inside

Beauty, Health And Fitness asked:

Health is wealth. By being physically fit, it can make a person look lean both inside and out.

There is a lot a person can do such jogging or walking  in the morning, playing basketball or any other sport with friends but if a person wants to have muscles and look lean, the best thing to do will be to sign up and workout in a gym.

Just like taking any medicine, one should first consult the doctor before undergoing any form of exercise.

Physical exercise is beneficial because it helps maintain and improve ones health from a variety of diseases and premature death.  It also makes a person feel happier and increases ones self esteem preventing one from falling into depression or anxiety. It has also shown to make a person with an active lifestyle live longer than a person who doesnt.

The best exercise plan should have cardiovascular and weight training exercises. This helps burn calories and increase the muscle to fat ratio that will increase ones metabolism and make one either gain or lose weight.

A person who has never worked out before should do it gradually. Doing it too much for the first time can make one pull a muscle or have an injury making it worse. Endurance will never be built in a day and doing it repeatedly will surely be good to the person.

Focusing on certain portion in the body can help make it improve. A good example is going to the gym and doing a workout more often in a specific area such as the abs can give one a chest pack.

But beauty is not only about having muscles which is what people can see. It is also about enhancing the beauty within.

Here are some things one can do everyday to stay beautiful and healthy;

Reading books and other reading material more often keeps the mind sharp just like working out keeps the body in shape.

Work no matter what kind it is produces stress. One can reduce this by taking the time out to do something special like lying in a hot tub, shopping or watching a movie. Studies have shown it is reliever and helps one from looking haggardly.

Pollution is something people cannot control given the size of the problem. When one goes out, it is best to put some form of protection such as beauty products that contain antioxidants that protect the skin from damage. There are also other beauty products available and choosing the right one with the help of a dermatologist can help the person.

Another way to stay healthy is to give up some vices. Most people smoke and drink. Smoking has been proven to cause lung cancer and other diseases as well complications for women giving birth. Excessive drinking has also shown to do the same.

For people who dont smoke, it is best to stay away from people who do since studies have shown that nonsmokers are also at risk of developing cancer due to secondary smoke inhalation.

Lastly, it is best to always start the day with a positive outlook. Just as studies have shown that exercise makes a person feel happier, smiling produces the same effect. A smile can do a lot and it is contagious in a positive sense. It brightens the day of not only one but others as well.

Your Guide to Staying Healthy This Winter

Andrew Mitchell asked:

The days are getting darker, autumn’s colour is slowly giving way to a drab landscape and no matter were you go, the sound of coughs and sniffles always seems to follow you. This can only mean one thing: winter is on the way.

Winter comes with all sorts of unpleasant surprises, which tend to have a negative impact on your physical, as well as psychological wellbeing. In order to keep you healthy and happy this winter, we have combed the world for some of the best tips and brought them together. Everyone has a different approach on how to stay healthy, but just in case your local witch-doctor’s remedy is faulty, let’s look at this year’s words of wisdom:

Your nutritionist says: Throw your Atkins low-carb diets out the window - carbs are key! Your body needs many carbohydrates to produce those extra energy reserves you need to keep warm during winter. Don’t go overboard of course -  the key to optimum health is to eat everything in moderation. It is all about the quality of the food (a good balance of whole foods, protein, vegetables, and starch), eaten in the proper quantities, which gives you the body you always wanted.

Your GP says: Build up your defences in as many ways as you can. One of the ways you can do this is by getting the flu jab. Modern medicine is a wonderful way of tacking long-existing illnesses. Other ways to boost your immune system are to take vitamin tablets and to get plenty of rest. A few extra hours of sleep a night will also increase your chances of staying healthy, doing miracles for your mind as well as your body. Also get some extra nutrients in addition to your daily meals, such as Zinc, Iron, and Vitamin C, will help strengthen your defences against the inevitable flues and sniffles that come knocking at your door at this time of year.

Your Osteopath says: Acupressure and acupuncture are well-used ancient practices which will enhance your sense of well being. They help spread and balance the energy within your body so you feel more centred and revitalised. A good deep-tissue massage can also achieve this sense of balance. By loosening up your stiff joints and sore muscles, a massage stimulates blood flow which enables you to feel fresh and more energetic. In order to treat external illness, we have to start by tackling the disease from within - only then can we treat the problem, not just the symptoms.

Your Psychologist says: Many of my clients suffer from seasonal depression. This is primarily caused by a lack of sunlight during the winter months - you won’t believe the positive impact light has on your mood, as well as your body. Go on a vacation this winter, to a place where you can get plenty of sunlight, exercise, and peace. The French Alps or Spain are excellent destinations.

These expert perspectives should be enough to keep you healthy in every possible way this winter season: physically, mentally, and emotionally. So beat down the problem before it gets you down - eat that well-balanced meal, take some vitamin pills, get a deep-tissue massage and plan that holiday for mid-January.  We all have our own ways of ploughing through another long winter, but hopefully, armed with these bits of advice, you are well on your way to emerging from that bitter cold unscathed, whole, and happy.

Are mental health issues a valid excuse for not filing unemployment claims in time?

backnoises asked:

I applied for unemployment insurance in July. Because I owned my own business that folded, I had extra paperwork to fill out and more hoops to jump through. Because of stress from the bankrupt business I have had mental health issues that have prevented me from filling in all the paperwork I needed to. I finally am receiving checks, but I was denied for the 21 back-dated weeks when I didn’t call in weekly due to severe depression and anxiety. I want to appeal the decision. Are mental health issues a valid reason for not completing the proper paperwork?
