Jordan asked:

I would LOVE to get a boxer. So would everyone else in my family. But they supposedly have alot of health issues, like more susceptible to cancer, and tumors at a younger age.
My parents refuse to buy from a breeder, because there are so many boxers you can buy from a shelter, and actually save them.

Grisham asked:

I believe that they don’t have the right to know anything about your medical issues, like if you have HIV or HEP C. But, what if your doctor appointments interfere with your work schedule? Like once every couple of weeks, at that point must you disclose? Or do you have the right to maintain its for a medical condition and keep it confidential? Do they have the right to demand to know unless you’re fired?

Stay Healthy Tips

Juliet Cohen asked:

Eating right, staying physically active, and not smoking are a few examples of good habits that can help you stay healthy. Eating the right foods and the right amounts of foods can help you live a longer, healthier life. People who are happier in their daily lives have healthier levels of key body chemicals than those who muster few positive feelings, a new study suggests. Try to balance the calories you get from food with the calories you use through physical activity (select for more information about physical activity). It is never too late to start eating right. Weighing too much or too little can lead to health problems. After age 45, many people gain too much weight. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t get into a car with a driver who has been drinking alcohol or using drugs. Medicines can also be given as metered dose inhalers, which deliver one dose of medicine at a time

Get regular exercise. Don’t use illegal (street) drugs of any kind, at any time. Don’t try even one puff, and try to keep yourself away from all cigarettes. Avoid situations where violence or fighting may cause you to be physically injured. Balance calories from foods and beverages with calories you burn off by your activities. Drink Alcohol Only in Moderation. If you drink alcohol, have no more than two drinks a day. Always use your seat belt. Some foods, like celery and gum, help you burn calories by chewing. Wear a hat and other protective clothing, as well as sunglasses, to protect your body from too much sun. Protection against sunburn is needed. Minerals, like calcium, iron, sodium chloride and zinc, are also essential to maintaining good health through nutrition.

Stay Healthy Tips

1. Eat a Nutritious Breakfast.

2. Choose healthy snacks.

3. Drink plenty of water.

4. Eat a variety of foods.

5. Get moving….don’t be a couch potato.

6. Avoid contaminated food or drinks.

7. Nutritional Supplements can be helpful.

How To Help Your Teenagers Stay Healthy: Physical Health

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Adrian Adams asked:

Teenagers have different health needs than children and adults, but they are not always aware of what makes a good health decision. The issue is further complicated by changing moods and temperaments, which could leave your steak-loving teen declaring they are now a vegetarian at any time. Fortunately, parents can take steps to help their teen stay healthy.

Physical Health

The physical health needs of a teenager are different from both younger children and adults. Between physical changes, hormonal changes, and lifestyle changes, teenagers encounter a variety of influences that have bearing on their physical health. The following can help you ensure that your teen stays physically healthy:

Discuss sexual health. Granted, this is a difficult topic for any parent to discuss with their child, but it is of vital importance. According to statistics, sexually active teens are more likely to drop out of school, as well as being more likely to use drugs and alcohol. They also face the possibility of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, some of which are treatable but not curable. Discuss abstinence, condom and birth control use, and sexually transmitted diseases with your teen. Don’t leave it to the health teacher to explain things or you run the risk of your teen getting all of their knowledge from their friends.

Help with food choices. Most teens do not get enough calcium or iron, but they get too much fat and sugar. Their food choices not only affect them now, but they can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, anemia and osteoporosis later. Make sure you have healthy food choices, like fruit for snacks, available in the home. While talking to them about future risks can help them choose wisely, you will get more results if you show them how healthy choices will help them now. For example, point out that a healthy diet and plenty of water will help them have clearer skin.

Give them vitamins. Sometimes, teens simply have less-than-ideal diets. Make sure you keep a good multi-vitamin, preferably one with calcium, available for your teen. While it is a good idea to suggest or encourage taking vitamins, remember that pushing the issue will only cause your teen to refuse.

Encourage exercise. Teens need more physical activity than pushing buttons on a cell phone. Encourage your teen to be physically active. For some, the easiest way to ensure exercise is to allow them to participate in team sports. Another method of getting your teen moving is to have family activities, like volleyball, basketball, or bicycling.

The physical health of your teen influences their physical health as an adult, so it is important that you help them maintain their physical health. Remember that one of the best ways of helping your teen stay physically healthy is to set a good example with your own choices.

How To Reduce Mold And Stay Healthy

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Jim Corkern asked:

Reducing the amount of mold growth in your home usually starts with removing the existing growth from the property.

his growth is typically located in the moist areas of your home like the kitchen and bathroom, but what if you do not already have mold in the house and you want to prevent it? There are a few different ways that you can do this, but one of the most helpful is the HEPA filter.

HEPA filters are specifically designed to remove particles from the air that we breathe indoors down 0.03 microns in size. Believe it or not, this means that it removes everything that is down to one third the width of a person’s hair.

Dust mites, mold spores, hair, pet dander, pollen, and just about anything else that you can think of gets removed by these filters, so you can imagine the help it must bring to people with respiratory conditions like emphysema, asthma, and allergies.

This is a great addition to the fact that it takes the mold spores out of the house before they have a chance to land on anything wet and start growing.

Vacuum cleaners that have HEPA filters are the only kind that should really be used in your home, since other types of vacuums may extract all of these particles from your carpet’s pile, but toss them right back into the air that you breathe. In reality, you might as well not have vacuumed at all, since it will just settle back down on the carpet.

If you decide to purchase an air purification system for your home, you should only get one that has a HEPA filter, since the other types simply do not work as well. This is the best kind of system that you can get, as long as you get one that can handle the square footage of your home.

Air purification systems are often used by more expensive businesses who have employees that spend a lot of time indoors in a particular space, since the air needs to be circulated and kept from being stale, but at the same time needs to be clean of particle debris that can cause illness.

The less employees are sick, the less sick days they take, and the less insurance is claimed. You may not work in a building like this, but it is a fact that people spend more time indoors these days and to stay healthy, breathing the cleanest air possible is a must.

1. Avoid smoking and smokers

Dangers of smoking.

If you smoke, you should quit, smoking harms you and everyone around you.

As I’ve mentioned in my previous article: “Diet: How to really make your Diet work for you?” , your body needs a proper Balanced Nutrition Diet, with a proper daily amount of: vitamins, minerals, proteins and carbohydrates.

What can a proper Balanced Nutrition do for you?

What is the BMI and how the knowledge of it, can help you to improve your health?

Knowing your BMI, you can tell whether your weight complies with the standard or you have extra weight (or your weight is insufficient).

The BMI is directly related to the health risk; as the BMI increases, the risk also rises.

That is why it is so important to know your Body Mass Index and keep it safe (18,5 - 24,8)

Body Mass Index Formulas:

BMI formula (Metric): BMI = ( Weight in Kilograms / ( Height in Meters ) x ( Height in Meters ))

BMI formula (English): BMI = ( Weight in Pounds / ( Height in inches ) x ( Height in inches )) x 703

3. Try to avoid drinking Alcohol.

So, why is it so important to avoid Alcohol, in order to improve your health?

Alcohol has many side effects:

- heart and central nervous system damage

- stomach ailments

- liver damage

- blackouts

- a high risk of alcoholism

e.t.c.

So, if you are serious about living a healthy lifestyle - avoid alcohol at all costs.

4. Exercise Daily.

Exercising is very important for human health and has proven to be a good cure for many well-known deceases.

How much exercising is enough?

In order to be healthy, you need at least 10 -15 minutes a day of exercising.

Also, you could combine your average daily activities with exercising, to save time.

These, are just few examples of what you can do:

- Walking at least 5000 steps a day

- Walking up stairs instead of using elevators.

- Do some running instead of walking.

e.t.c.

5. Sleep Right.

A good night sleep is very important, without it, all of the things I have mentioned above, would not work.
