Are Men’s Health Issues Different From Women’s and Children’s

Monday, December 29th, 2008
Dr. Robert Buckley asked:

While there are many health issues that are universal concerns for men, women and children,

there are also a variety of health concerns that specifically to men and affect a man’s

overall health. Issues such as arthritis, heart disease, prostate cancer and other forms of

cancer, sexual health and vigor all comprise the top concerns men face today. And,

unfortunately, most, but not all, are age related.

As a man ages he is subject to several conditions that can affect his mortality. The most

common cause of morbidity in the aging man is cardiovascular disease, be it heart attack or

stroke.

The second leading cause of death is cancer, and we currently do not know exactly why. This

may be due to the oxidative stress that our bodies are under, and the inability of our diets

to provide us with enough antioxidants to combat these effects. This all get worse as we get

older, in particular, prostate cancer seems to be on the rise. The cause of this is

uncertain. Part of it may be related to improvements made in early diagnosis of the disease.

There is an obvious correlation with prostate cancer and aging.

Men suffer drastic hormonal changes as we get older, usually after the age of 35. Prostatic

enlargement known as BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy) is becoming the fastest growing

health concern men face today. BPH is in large part related to hormonal changes that occur

with aging which relates to male hormonal function (androgens). Significant BPH can lead to

obstruction of urinary function and potential renal failure if untreated. BPH has been

reported in over 90% of men over the age of 85, although it is relatively uncommon before

the age of 35.

The incidence and prevalence of osteoarthritis increase as we age as well. Painful swollen

joints, caused by the deterioration of cartilage between bones occur, as well as decreased

pain free range of motion.

But, as we mentioned earlier, not all health issues are age related. Men, in their youth

and prime, are very active. Maintaining that level energy and vigor is of great concern to

men of all ages. A well rounded, nutritionally balanced diet is essential to a man’s

readiness and ability to perform well, on the field, court even in the bedroom.

It just makes sense that better nutrition consumption would results in better performance, and nutritional deficiencies can often result in poor performance, decreased endurance, early fatigue, or inability to perform to your optimal levels of activity.

maintaining adequate amounts of vitamins and antioxidants It is essential to optimal health and vitality. B vitamins help minimize the risk of heart disease and stroke by decreasing levels of homocysteine. Antioxidants are important to combat the diseases of aging, to minimize oxidation of cholesterol (which can lead to heart attack) and to maintain proper immune function.

Any active male should be very watchful of there dietary intake. The research shows that strenuous athletic activity and or exercise can and will rapidly deplete the essential nutrient your body needs to perform daily functions properly. IN these cases,

vitamins, minerals and other supplements may be necessary to help improve performance.

Do you Know What Candida Is, Could it Be Related to Your Health Issues

Monday, December 29th, 2008
Jerry Cahill asked:

Candida Albicans is an infection caused by a species of the yeast Candida. Actually everyone needs some yeast to maintain their health. When yeast is in proper balance within your system it is often called “good flora”. If yeast overgrows it is often referred to as Yeast Overgrowth or Candida.

What causes yeast to overgrow? One of the common causes is antibiotics. Antibiotics tend to kill even the good microorganisms within your system allowing an imbalance or “bad flora”. Other causes are diets high in sugars, white flour based foods, grains, yeasty items such as beer and wine etc.

It can also be related to a weakened immune system. Our immune system is designed to protect us but if we have neglected our health through poor diet, exercise habits, or environmental exposures it is more likely we can suffer from Candida symptoms.

Candida has a wide variety of symptoms. It presents itself in so many ways that often times physicians never consider it as a possible problem. Some of the common symptoms are itching, white tongue, allergies, rashes, headaches, joint pains, fatigue, mental fog to name a few. People who have symptoms find them ongoing and non-responsive to many treatments.

How does one treat Candida Abilcans? First of all if you are taking antibiotics you must find an alternative so you can get off of the antibiotics. Secondly it is important to improve your diet. Do not believe anyone who says they can cure Candida without your need to change your diet. You may not need to go on an extremely rigid diet, but you must greatly reduce Candida causing foods.

You should also avoid YEAST and yeast containing products including Alcoholic and Baked goods, as well as: Mushrooms, cheeses with rinds, coffee, most teas, condiments containing vinegar (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, salad dressing), fermented foods and drinks (cider, root beer), bottles or canned fruit juices, dried fruits, strawberries, melons, canned fruits, leftovers (older than 24 hours), malted products (barley malt, malted milk, cereals, candies), peanuts, pistachios, peanut oil, peanut butter, processed and/or smoked meats and smoked fish (beef jerky, corned beef, hot dogs, luncheon meats, pastrami, sausages), and pickled foods.

Finally a good probiotic is essential to help you regain the “good flora” balance to reclaim your health. Since Candida may have weakened your immune system a good immunity booster may also be helpful.

Men Secret Health Issues - Part VI

Saturday, December 27th, 2008
Dr.Anna Hardy asked:

It is not abnormal to have a slight curvature in the *****. In fact, most men have their penises curved slightly towards one side. It is nothing out of the ordinary, and in most men, it does not hamper the man from performing penetrative ***. However, in some people there is a condition called as Peyronie’s disease. Men suffering from this disease have very large curvatures of their penises, so much so that penetrative *** becomes a difficulty for them. It is in this case that ***** curves need to be surgically corrected.

Any deviation of the male ***** from the straight position can be termed as a ***** curve. The ***** is a highly flexible organ, and due to this it can curve in any position. It can be tilted to the right or to the left, or even upwards and downwards. Even among people with ***** curves, there are different extents of curvatures.

The human ***** is about 5.5 to 7.5 inches long on an average when erect. Of course, there are men with penises on both sides of this scale. The main bulk of the ***** is a spongy tissue called as the corpus cavernosa. The corpus cavernosa contains of two channels of spongy tissues which run through the length on both sides of the *****. In healthy men, both the channels of the spongy tissues grow equally and the ***** becomes straight. However, if for some reason, one channel of the corpus cavernosa grows more than the other, then it would lead the ***** to get inclined on the other side.

This generally occurs during injury. In men who suffer accidents on one side of the penis, the spongy tissues on that side may not grow properly. This would lead to a droop on the other side. Even wearing tight underwear may cause irreparable damage to the ***** and cause it to gain an unnatural curve. Men who indulge in very hectic sexual *********** could damage their penises. One example of this is the wrong use of the woman on top position. This position has the possibility of the ***** coming out often and this could tear some of the ligaments. **** *** is also responsible for ***** curvatures.

The above are some of the mechanical factors that cause ***** curves. However, ***** curves can also be caused due to biological factors. The Peyronie’s disease is one of the most important causative factors. Peyronie’s disease is a condition in which a scar develops on one side of the ***** without any apparent reason. This stops the growth of the ***** on that particular side and hence the ***** begins to droop on the other side. In small children, there could be ***** curves due to inexplicable reasons. These are congenital defects, which must be corrected in the younger days itself. Contrary to popular belief, ************ does not cause ***** curves. However, if there is an injury during ************ – as might happen when a young boy experiments with his ***** in his early pubertal days – then ***** curves could develop in the future.

Generally speaking, a moderate ***** curve poses no problems to men. Penises that are curved can be used quite effectively for sexual penetration, and does not pose a problem to either partner. There is also no relation whatsoever between ***** curves and impotence. ***** curves are just a cosmetic problem, and they do not interfere with the reproductive system of the male in any way.

Nowadays, ***** curvatures are mostly treated by surgical methods. This is a corrective tissue surgery and hence it needs to be performed at the hands of a very skilful surgeon. If the curvature of the ***** is caused due to a scar retained by an injury or due to Peyronie’s disease, then the method employed is to inject the scar with Verapamil. This drug causes the scar to heal itself. Healing the scar in most cases corrects the curvature of the *****.

Men are also increasingly using natural herbs and their extracts for the treatment of their curved penises. The efficacy of these herbs is still being checked into by leading pharmaceutical companies of the advanced countries, and most of them have yielded positive results. The immensely popular Ayurvedic preparation known as Shilajit is one of the effective alternative methods in use. Other herbs which have shown promising results are Panax ginseng, Ashwagandha and Ginkgo biloba.

Curvature of the ***** to an extent is a very natural male phenomenon and may not need correction at all. In fact, several tailors would design the trousers in a way to accommodate the curved *****. Hence, it is not much of an issue. The ***** curvature would need a correction only for cosmetic reasons – though women actually have no issue with curved penises – or for medical reasons, such as if the ***** is very highly curved for penetrative ***. Otherwise, the best method is to let the ***** be as it is for it will pose no problems either now or in the future.

Randy Pausch’s testimony to the Labor, Health and Human Serv

Thursday, December 25th, 2008
StopPancreaticCancer asked:

On March 13, 2008, Dr. Randy Pausch provided testimony to the Labor, Health & Human Services Subcommittee on behalf of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. This is his personal story about his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and his fight to survive.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the US, but receives extremely little federal funding to support research efforts. In March of 2008, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network went to Congress to urge the federal government to provide critical funding to speed the cure for this horrible disease.

How can we improve awareness of mental health issues in society?

Thursday, December 25th, 2008
Jim asked:

There has been some recent interest in this kind of issue, and I wondered just how we can help change attitudes to mental illness? I don’t know how it is in other societies, but in my experience there tends to be a conflation of mental disorders. Some people seem to think that fairly minor disorders essentially spell a lifetime of homicidal violence form that person. Similarly, there is a real stigma involved; if mental illness is a problem for Western health professionals then surely it can’t be helped by creating an atmosphere of stigma. After all, how can we treat mental illness when people are ashamed to admit to having such problems?

Anyway, I was wondering what you thought. Is education the answer? Legislation? What?

Thanks for reading.

The Media and Health Issues

Saturday, December 20th, 2008
Bob Taylor asked:

There are many important health issues that seem to always come to the forefront in our world of today. Diseases like cancer, AIDS and heart disease, health issues that most people are more concerned about. The other health issues are that cause a panic, like bird flu and mad cow disease. These health issues are rare, but they get so much media attention that people start to worry more about them then the health issues they should be worried about.

The media’s goal is to create a story that will get people watching. They do offer great information, but usually it is blown out of proportion.

The media plays a big role in the publics view of health issues. Unfortunately, the media is less concerned with people’s health then they may seem.

The media has a habit of turning a small issue not a big one. Bird flu is a good example. It never became as huge of a health issue as the media made it seem. They quoted medical professionals out of context often, making it look as though it was hitting the US. This type of media influence can be very bad.

When people focus more on what the media is saying about rare health issues they end up worrying and focusing on that particular issue. In the mean time they are forgetting to worry about the real health issues that offer a real threat towards them, like cancer or heart disease. The media may be helpful in many cases, but when it comes to health issues, people should take what the media has to say with a grain of salt and stick to discussing health issues with their doctor.
