“Health Food” vs. Healthy Food — How to read labels

Sunday, August 31st, 2008
headveg asked:

Do you know how to read food labels? Maybe you THOUGHT you did. Truth is, you probably don’t.

But Jeff Novick of the Pritikin Center does, and in his full talk he shows the 3 easy steps you MUST know if you ever buy foods at any supermarket or “health” food store.

In this online excerpt, Novick — who used to be a food service manager at Kraft Foods — exposes one of the dirty secrets major food corporations use to deceive consumers. It’s no accident labels are so confusing!

High-protein/low-carb diet proponents claim that the US started eating “low-fat” foods 20 years ago and yet still gained weight, “proving” that the low-fat diet wasn’t effective.

But that’s nonsense, as Novick demonstrates in his talk.

The foods weren’t/aren’t low-fat at all. Food companies use sleight of hand to make them appear that way.

Novick shows how to cut through the nonsense of food labeling to see what you need to see, and understand what you’re really getting.

This is an excerpt from Novick’s 80-minute talk at the VegSource 2007 Healthy Lifestyle Expo, and part of a 12-part series of top health expert presentations.

In his full fascinating and entertaining presentation, Novick teachers the “three easy rules” for cutting through the b.s. and quickly understanding food labels, to know exactly what you’re getting. After watching his talk, you’ll never look at packaged food the same!

Sexual and Women’s Health Issues

Friday, August 29th, 2008
Stephen Todd asked:

Women’s health is not only monitored and maintained by the foods that she eats, or the exercise she completes throughout the week, but also by the status of her sexual health.

Women’s sexual health is quite important because there are so many complications that can occur within a women’s body that could result in life-threatening consequences.

What makes some of these sexual health issues differ from a man is not only the fact that two different ******** are involved, but also the fact that women give birth, thus increasing the complications that could arise and affect a woman’s health.

Vaginal Bleeding

One of the things that affect both the sexual and overall women’s health is the presence of vaginal bleeding after sex, also referred to as post-coital bleeding. If a woman is not on her period at the time, this could be a warning sign of something that needs the attention of a doctor.

Many possible culprits could cause such an act to occur. Understanding sexual and women’s health is important because some causes of vaginal bleeding are common and can be easily treated with no future affects to women’s sexual health, while other causes can turn into life-altering complications.

Cervical dysplasia can cause Vaginal bleeding, which means that there is the presence of precancerous cells within the lining of the cervix that could affect women’s health. The risk of developing these cells is increased when a women compromises her sexual health by having *** before the age of 18; having *** with multiple partners; having a child before they turn 16 or have had a STD in the past. Cryosurgery can treat this condition, as well as other procedures before the cells turn into cervical cancer.

Cervical Polyps

Another women’s health issue deals with cervical polyps, which are growths that extend, pass the cervix or cervical canal. These fragile, red, or purple pests can be easily removed without pain.

Bacterial Infections

Two well-known bacterial infections are transmitted during *** or other contact with semen, vaginal secretions or blood. They are called chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea offers several treatments that can be prescribed by a doctor.

Vaginitis, also called cervicitis, is the inflammation or swelling of the cervix or vagina, which is caused by an infection. Depending on what caused the vaginitis, a treatment is available.

Trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted disease caused by a protozoan, can compromise a women’s sexual health, as well as the health of their newborn. It is possible for a mother to pass this disease onto her newborn during a vaginal birth.

One of the most common infections to affect women’s sexual health is the vaginal yeast infection, which is an overgrowth of harmless fungi that found in the ******. The result is an odorless, cheese-like discharge accompanied by itching and burning. Three out of four women will have at least one yeast infection throughout their lifetime.

When a woman wishes to prevent this sort of infection from affecting her sexual health, a few preventive measures are available - women’s sexual health tips concerning a yeast infection include:

· Wear white cotton panties

· Use only water-based lubricants for the vagina

· Always wipe from front to back after a bowel movement

· Eat one cup of yogurt per day when on antibiotics

· Avoid bath products containing perfume in the vaginal area

· Do not ****** because it creates an attractive breeding ground for yeast to flourish.

Other sexual and women’s health concerns include endometritis, uterine polyps, fibroid tumors, as well as adenomysis, which can affect the uterus and ovaries. Never ignore vaginal bleeding.

Calling a doctor immediately is the best way to solve the sexual and women’s health issues.

Alcohol is an important component of many element of several societies for many years. Many believe that alcoholic drinks have flourished gatherings, parties, and other social celebrations. A number of individuals believe that alcoholic drinks should be served in social gatherings to give enthusiasm to certain events. Alcohol is produced when vegetables, fruits, or grains are fermented. Fermentation is a process which uses yeast or bacteria to change sugars in these items into alcohol. This substance is also used as cleaners and antiseptics.

Alcohol is a depressant that can act as a sedative drug and may slow down the nervous system. In small doses, alcohol can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Alcohol however may do more harm than good if overused. People who overuse alcohol may feel confused and disoriented. Too much alcohol in body may affect the brain and lead to poor coordination, faulty judgment, slowed reflexes, distorted vision, memory lapses, blackouts. Alcohol can damage many organs in the body, it is absorbed directly in the bloodstream and raises the risk of acquiring life-threatening ailments like cancer. Extremely high doses of alcohol at one time can cause alcohol poisoning which can lead to coma or death.

Despite the adverse effects of alcohol, many individuals still engage in drinking this beverage for many reasons. Many teens and young people use alcohol because of curiosity, relax, fit in a crowd, and feel older. One of the reasons why many people are engaged in alcohol is the fact that from a very young age, children are exposed to advertising messages of alcohol. A number of advertisements of alcohol show people drinking alcohol enjoying life. While in reality, it is the exact opposite. Because alcohol damages the nervous system, drinking alcohol can may people do embarrassing things and look stupid acts like ****** on themselves or throwing up. Drinking alcohol may lead also develop bad breath and hangovers.

In addition to the health hazards of alcohol, studies show that almost many deaths among teens are alcohol-related. The use of greatly alcohol increases the possibility of teens and many individuals of being involved in car accidents, ******* or homicide.

Studies show that in every thirty minutes, someone dies from an alcohol related car accident. Driving while under the influence of alcohol can cause many health problems and affect body reactions while driving. People who are drunk may experience decreased amount of performance and judgment while driving. Drunk drivers are not the only ones who are in danger, these drivers may distribute danger to passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.

Alcohol disorders amplify ******* and risk, at least one-third if individuals who have committed ******* are alcohol dependent. In addition, ******* among alcoholics also seem to increase with age. A study released by Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research conclude that middle-aged and older alcoholics have higher risk to commit ******* than young adults who are alcoholics.

Consuming inappropriate amounts of alcohol puts individuals at risk for several health issues like cancer like cancer and diabetes. Alcohol may reduce the body’s absorption of necessary nutrients. Many alcoholics do not partake in healthy diets, therefore further harming the body. The health effects of alcohol should not be taken for granted but should act as a reminder to drink alcoholic drinks in moderation.

Will my health issues effect my life insurance acceptance?

Thursday, August 21st, 2008
slovesn asked:

I am a 27 year old female, scheduled to have a medical exam tomorrow for a $250k life insurance policy I applied for. I’m a little nervous about how my health issues may effect my insurability.

1) I have ADHD, for which I take 80mg Strattera, daily;
2) I have disc degeneration at three levels in my lower back, for which I occasionally (1 x a week or less) take Vicodin and/or Tizanidine to control the pain. I do not plan to have surgery for this issue, as it does not have a big impact on my life.

Will either or both of these issues effect my insurability? The ADHD is treated by my primary doctor, which I will certainly have to disclose. The Strattera will show up on my blood test anyway. However, is it necessary that I disclose that I am also seeing an orthopedic doctor a few times per year? Niether the Vicodin or Tizanidine will be detected in my blood or urine, as it has been over two weeks since I have taken either.

Serious answers only, please. Thank you

Dahn Yoga Helps Relieve Arthritis and Other Health Issues

Monday, August 18th, 2008
Larry Rosenberg asked:

We usually assume that getting older means a loss of energy, strength, flexibility, purpose and even hope. And in their place: one or more major diseases and several minor conditions. For more and more people in the United States and around the world, the answer is holistic fitness training. In size, reach and reputation, one of the leading training systems globally is Dahn Yoga & Health Centers.

In her early 60s, Sandra lives in the Midwest. As a Dahn Yoga practitioner for more than three years, her case is typical of people who improve their physical health and emotional state through regular classes, individual healing sessions, advanced workshops, and practice at home or the office.

With Arthritis, Sandra experienced a life of pain and limitations, and other related health problems. Here are her words, “Before I started Dahn Yoga,

several life events combined to create depression and several physical challenges. I retired from a 45-year working career, my sister had a mental

breakdown, and my elderly mother passed away. Arthritis, two degenerated discs in my back, and soft tissue damage from a car wreck 40 years prior made getting out of bed in the morning very painful.

“I had to walk bent over from the waist for a few minutes before I could stand up strait. I had standing appointments with a chiropractor every 10 days. Activity always put me in pain, and without a routine to follow inactivity took over, thus losing interest in life. Although I did not do much, I was tired all the time. The local senior center offered free access to physical fitness machines, but somehow I could not get out my door by 10:30 a.m. to drive two miles and take advantage of those machines.”

Then Sandra found Dahn Yoga. As often happens with new members, her health improvement was quick and dramatic. She reported, “Within two weeks of beginning Dahn Yoga classes, I noticed an amazing increase in my energy level. I painted walls 13-feet high from a ladder. I felt alive again. Many of my women friends asked, ‘What are you doing? You’re glowing!’ I replied, ‘It’s Dahn Yoga.’ Although the drive from to my home to the center is often an hour, I still go at least three times a week.”

Like many other Dahn Yoga practitioners, Sandra made progress in several physical health areas. As she put it, “I noticed an immediate improvement in my back. I could get out of bed easily. I have been to see my chiropractor only five times in the past 3-1/2 years. I gained back one inch in height. I felt full of energy. Then my body changed. Weighing the same as I had six years before, I lost 19 inches in my arms, thighs, waist and bust. I am wearing clothes I wore when I weighed 20 pounds less than I am now. Even my eyesight got better. I went from 2.50 to 1.25 magnification.”

As typically occurs with Dahn Yoga training, improvements in physical conditions lead to feeling better emotionally. According to Sandra, “Driving in heavy traffic has always been a challenge for me. I became angry, frustrated and impatient. Thanks to my Dahn practice, it no longer bothers me. Switching lanes is not a contest or a personal insult any more. I’m relaxed, thinking, ‘It’s just traffic.’ The traffic has not changed, but I have.”

“A number of deep personal issues from long ago have resolved themselves. Because of the various programs that I have taken, which Dahn Yoga’s founder Ilchi Lee created, I do not feel guilt or shame for not succeeding in some life choices made a long time ago. After carrying these failure feelings for years, now I am free. This freedom improved my self esteem to where I felt good enough to start Internet dating. I am now in a serious relationship with a gentle, kind, thoughtful and funny gentleman.”

In a total health program, meditation plays a key role. This is Sandra’s viewpoint, “Meditation calms and centers me. I value the serenity. Dahn Yoga has taught me that there are many ways to meditate. The exercises in class put me into a meditative state. When I start my day with meditation, everything goes better. Little things simply do not bother me, and I handle the big stuff better. After being a typical Type A personality most of my life, I am happy now to be Type B.”

Dahn Yoga provides holistic health and brain education in the form of energy-training programs to individuals, families and communities. Dahn Yoga offers a wide range of innovative, highly effective preventive and restorative methods.

Through the 600 Dahn centers worldwide – currently in the United States, Canada, South Korea, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, Russia and Brazil),

around 1 million people use its methods daily. In the United States since 1991, Dahn Yoga has 120 centers in 15 metropolitan areas.

Dahn Yoga improves one’s health by activating the energy system to maximize one’s natural self-healing power. It brings an experiential holistic balance to one’s life by awakening one to an integrative perspective toward life and the world. Through Dahn Yoga, one finds a way into one’s body, mind, and finally one’s self.

Is Your Diet Out of Date? Lose Weight With the in Fashion Diet Regardless of Health Issues

Friday, August 15th, 2008
Kacy Carr asked:

Is your diet safe, is it out of date. With new weight loss plans introduced at what seems a speed faster than light has us query is an aging diet a healthy one.

When dieting was first brought to the attention of the obese the whole concept of losing weight this way excited the flab carriers who believed is was going to be easy. It is only easy if you want it to be. Is there reason for concern about dated diets now evidence tells us otherwise? Do we stick with the diet proved to be best many moons ago or opt for the more up market diet that begs to differ? Is the fashionable diet better than the latter? Listen up fat people and I mean that in a nice way, the diet you choose should be one you are comfortable with and one that does not affect your health whilst shedding the pounds.

A sensible eating plan followed with light exercise is the answer. Okay both options mentioned are always included with most diet plans these days, so what’s new, well could it be the expensive dietary foods and gym memberships that come included too. If will power has never been your strong point and you need guidance then you can join a diet club that not only mentors but monitors the whole process. If you are determined to go it alone, better still, you can devise a diet plan to suit not only you, but your pocket too.

I have my self have never had a problem with weight, but in saying that the pounds did drop off after bedtime meals were cut out, eating a Sunday roast while propped up with pillows was never going to be comfortable. Avoid munching at bedtime; crumbs only upset your sleep pattern

One reason not to eat before bedtime is because of the significant weight gain issue; this as we speak is in dispute. If I have to argue the cause then let the debate commence, diet experts or not. If my self had not seen the waistline not so rounded any more, or that of not having to increase dress size has left me confused over the dispute. However I wait the outcome of this review because each individual’s body differs, and because of this is more the reason why your diet has to be tailor made for you. When the body sleeps it is less active, therefore processes slow down. Scoffing before slumber will not burn off calories, instead the fat is stored. Consult your doctor or dietician before dieting or exercising. Never rush things, neither crash diets nor sudden exertion is safe.

Diets that restrict calories or the types of food ‘permitted’ can lead you to be deficient in the nutrients and vitamins that are vital for the body. Although food is a survival source it can also kill be it the cause of obesity. Our bodies use food for energy. It stores any excess energy as fat. Simply explained, eating more food than your body needs for daily deeds and cell protection will see weight gain. To lose weight stored fat needs to be gone, do this by reducing calorie intake and implementing light exertion. Dieting is about sacrificing, i.e. cutting out cake and biscuits. Nibbling one biscuit extra a week can lead to a 5lb weight gain annually, goodbye to digestives.

The person, who increases the amount of exercise that they do, and keeps the same diet and calorie intake, will certainly lose weight. A 20 minute walk is great for burning calories and fat. Aerobics classes, running, walking, swimming and cycling will all better your fitness levels and keep you in shape. Choose an exercise you enjoy this will encourage you to stick to it Take location and cost into consideration if joining a fitness club. Park the car up and incorporate longer walks, walk round the block twice to go to the shops. Use the stairs instead of the lift, if you order a taxi or get on a bus then get out or get off before destination. You will not lose body fat if chocolate, greasy chips and candy still list on your menu. Goodbye is not imminent for these delights just eat them in smaller quantise and not as frequent

If a diet promises overnight weight loss, think “who are these promoters trying to kid”.

Intake of 300 to 500 calories less per day should lead to a loss of between one and two pounds per week. Calculated weight loss is about three stone a year. Fat contains a vast amount of calories out of all the food types (protein, carbohydrates) snub fatty foods and eat more wholegrain bread, fruit and vegetables.

1 Swap fizzy soda and cordial with mineral water

2 Replace whole milk for semi-skimmed

3 Lightly spread margarine on sandwiches Cut out sugar in hot drinks.

4 Ban sugary foods, biscuits and crisps between meals because they are problem causers of weight gain this applies to drinking beer and wine also.

Do not miss meals to lose weight. Missing a meal will reduce your calorie intake and can lead to binge eating later to fill the rumbling tummy

Irregular eating habits can disrupt the body’s metabolism making it harder to lose weight. Start your own diet plan, weigh yourself once a week before breakfast. Keep records and see if a pattern develops from doing a 20 minute walk every day, declining alcohol form Monday to Friday along with sugary foods. Substitute with healthy snacks i.e. fruit, trim fat from meat and grill all food. Take the weight of your mind and start today.
